Being a fan of sport is like being a musician; the sports fan and the musician are not classified by age.

If the musician can play the tune and appreciates the music and can harmonise with the others in the group, it will make a good tune even better.

It is the same with sports fans. They need an understanding, a knowledge of sports and an appreciation of sport. Then when the debate starts on the way home from the game, at work, in the pub or just at home while listen to the pundits on the TV, the real fan will enhance the debate. The supporter talks about “we” and “ye”; rarely, if ever acknowledges that the opposition might have some good points, and generally just causes confusion.

Be a fan, be independent, don’t follow the herd.

  1. Hi Diarmuid

Read your article on Billa’s grand uncle – very interesting read.

The tournament was held last night and the Barrs won a thriller by a point 3-15 to 3-14. The Barrs were captained by none other than 13 year old Bill O’Connell (Billa’s grandson) who ended up with 1-1 from right corner forward !

Great job on the research and i’ll see you in the Park for the Barrs v Glen in the summer (Georgie and Donie will be there in the Open Stand in spirit don’t worry ! )

  2. Hi Kieran,

I’m impressed that you found my blog. It’s more an experiment than anything else. I actually was out in the Barrs last night for a short while. I saw the first 15 minutes of the game. At that stage it looked as if the Rockies would have an easy win.

Billa was on top of the world. He asked me last autumn if I could help him find out anything about Willie John O’Connell. I did a bit of digging and I was just about to give up when I got lucky and found a paragraph about the fund. I managed to trace the rest of it from there.

I hope you are all well? HOpefully I see you in the Park in June.

    Diarmuid.
